9th
November 1923 – 17th April 2006
It is with deep regret
that we must announce the passing, on the 17th April 2006
in Düsseldorf, of our dearly beloved Brother Albert Settle following
a prolonged illness.
Brother and Companion
Albert was initiated into the Craft in the Grand Land Lodge of
Germany’s Johannisloge Rose und Akazie Nr. 518 in Düsseldorf on the
17th April 1961. He was a Founder Member of our Lodge Niederrhein
No. 892, consecrated in Düsseldorf on 5th December 1964
and also a Founder Member of our Rheinland Royal Arch Chapter No. 1,
consecrated in Düsseldorf on 11th November 1972.
His great enthusiasm
coupled with his undoubted ability, resulted in his becoming the
Master of Lodge Niederrhein in 1968 and again in 1989, the Lodge’s
25th Anniversary. He was also First Principal of the
Rheinland Royal Arch Chapter in 1975.
MW Bro Albert was
first appointed an Officer of Grand Lodge in 1970. He was elected
Grand Treasurer of our Grand Lodge in 1972 and of our Grand Chapter
in 1977. During his time in these offices he succeeded in putting
the finances of our Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter on to the very
secure footing which exists to this day. His engaging personality
and humour, together with his many other talents, ensured his well
earned progression to Grand Master and First Grand Principal in
1980. Brother Albert was also active in the Grand Lodge of Mark
Master Masons of England and Wales, together with The Ancient and
Honourable Fraternity of Royal Ark Mariners.
During his three years
as Grand Master he displayed qualities of leadership which were of
inestimable value to our Grand Lodge. He went on to become our
representative on the United Grand Lodges of Germany Senate for six
years between 1988 and 1994. As a mark of the affection and the
hard work he carried out to bring together Germany Lodges of all
languages and rituals he was awarded the Paulskirchen Medal by the
United Grand Lodges of Germany and subsequently the Award of Honour,
following his three years as our Grand Master.
His
natural ability to educate and motivate our Brethren and Companions
alike, led to him to be elected an Honorary Member of no less than
five of our Craft Lodges and three of our Royal Arch Chapters.
MW Bro Albert lived in
Düsseldorf where he became the senior accountant for Price
Waterhouse (Europe) Ltd and was largely responsible for that
company’s expansion into Germany in the nineteen‑sixties.
With his untimely
death, Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter mourn the passing of a truly
dedicated Brother, the likes of whom we are seldom privileged to
have met or about whom we are truly able to say, that it was an
honour to have known such a Mason.
It is indeed very sad
to record that the last years of MW Bro Albert’s life were
unfortunately spent in a debilitating illness, with little relief
from his sufferings. Our condolences go out to his family, and may
the G A O T U grant our Brother and Companion eternal peace in the
Grand Lodge above.
In sorrow,
Michael
A Cooper
Grand Master
First Grand Principal
